Who do you know??
Call for Recognition Nominations

Do you know a person who has dedicated many years of conscientious service to her/his school or clinic? How about a program that has made an impact on the public in areas of treatment or prevention of communication disorders? Maybe you work in a public school program that has been innovative in delivering services to children or adults with communication needs. What is more important than the ability to communicate? Not much. Who helps people of all ages communicate? We do!
Everyday speech and hearing professionals across our state provide services in clinics, schools, universities, preschool programs
and more places than can be easily counted. Everyday clients express their heartfelt gratitude to these people. They are shaping or reshaping the lives of many who might not have become the communicators they now are. It is time to let SCSHA, the state, and the nation, know who they are and what is being accomplished here.
The call for recognition nominations has been sent to your mailbox. Take a few minutes today to read the recognition call and make a nomination. You will see the call form is simplified and more readable. The committee is asking for only one typed letter with 3 signatures. You can ask questions via email and follow up with a hard copy nomination. There are five categories. Look around…..you can probably nominate someone for each category. Let other SCSHA members and ASHA know the good things happening in South Carolina.

Send your questions to msteppling@colacoll.edu or call 803-786- 3751. The deadline to submit a nomination is December 16, but if you wait you might forget and the state and nation may never know what you know!! We have some of the best professionals and programs right here!

Executive Board Changes SCSHA Management Firm

The SCSHA Board is very pleased to announce that Craven Management Associates, LLC officially became SCSHA’s new management company on October 1 st . The decision to leave J. Edgar Eubanks was by mutual agreement, and our transition has been very smooth.

A Search Committee of four Board members was formed last February. We spent most of the spring working with six companies who wished to submit proposals. Several were interviewed this summer. Through the entire process Craven  Management was a front-runner. They already manage the Pennsylvania and Missouri state speech  associations and the Council of State Association Presidents (CSAP), which provides leadership training for SCSHA Presidents and President-Elects. Obviously they have unique knowledge of the activities and needs of speech-language pathologists and audiologists. In addition, Robert Craven is a CPA who has expertise in financial planning and budget management. Diane Yenerall has extensive experience in technology and conference planning. We are very excited about the new ideas they have for our publications, website and listserv, and our annual conference. You will have an opportunity to meet our new management team in Myrtle Beach in February.

IN MEMORIAM
Jennifer Mungo

The South Carolina Speech, Language and Hearing Foundation, established in late 1997, had been the vision of many professionals in the state for over a decade. It was not until Jennifer Mungo became  president of SCSHA that the Foundation became a reality.
Committed to education, service and research in the field, Jennifer recognized the need and impact that a Foundation could have on the training of future speech-language pathologists. Under Jennifer’s leadership, the Foundation by-laws were drafted and education, service and research became its philanthropic foci.
Since its inception, the Foundation has honored four students from various colleges and universities around the state with educational awards. Presenting these scholarships to well-deserving students is a source of great pride to all of us and we have Jennifer to thank. Jennifer’s dedication to the profession and to this association will always be remembered; but no more so than, when in years to come, we witness a deserving student with the same dedication and commitment to the field receive a Foundation award.
 Thank you, Jennifer.

 SCSHA NEW DISPLAY BOARD
The South Carolina Speech and Hearing Association's new display board was a hit at the WIS TV Back To School Bash. We appreciate the Columbia Sertoma Club for submitting the $1800 grant so we could purchase the board and accessories. Members of SCSHA were encouraged to use the display board at local school, county and state activities where they would have the opportunity to educate the public. The pictures are interchangeable and there are pamphlet holders for information that is specific to your work setting. The board folds and fits into a travel case which makes it easy to transport. If you would like to use the display board, please contact Melanie Anderson, Columbia College, melanderson@colacoll.edu.

THE S.C. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION ANNOUNCES NEW CERTIFICATE RENEWAL PLAN
The South Carolina Department of Education has finalized details and a projected timeline for  implementation of its new certificate renewal plan. For a detailed description of this plan, please visit www.scteachers.org. Access the “Certification” link and look for “Certificate Renewal Plan…learn more”.
The new plan offers speech-language therapists employed by school districts opportunities to receive credit for continuing education units from a wide variety of sources. This plan will be piloted during the 2002-2003 school year in ten demographically-representative school districts participating on a voluntary basis. The current projected timeline indicates that full implementation of the plan is scheduled to begin July 1, 2004.  For more information contact: Linda Payne, Coordinator of Recertification and Mentoring, Office of Teacher Certification Division of Teacher Quality, 1600 Gervais Street, Columbia, SC 29201

WIS BACK TO SCHOOL BASH
The WIS Back to School Bash was a great success! The SCSHA booth had a great location and was  directly visible as the public came in the front door of the Cantey Building. As Jane Honaker and I prepared the booth on Friday, we had a worker come to the booth and talk about how well  his child was doing in speech therapy and how grateful he was for the services. That started our experience on a ery positive note. Saturday was the big event and we distributed about 500 mouth whistles and 250 pamphlets. We answered questions about disorders and services, then listened to positive experiences that people encountered with professionals in the speech and hearing field.
